The Premature Menopause Clinic London – who should attend?

The Premature Menopause Clinic, London is dedicated to the provision of care to women who have experienced premature ovarian insufficiency. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recently published guidelines on the management of premature menopause in which they encourage General Practitioners to offer HRT to women having POI until the age of natural menopause. The guidelines also recommend that such women should be referred to healthcare professionals who have the relevant experience to help them manage all aspects of physical and psychosocial health related to their condition.

At the Premature Menopause Clinic London, we aim to provide a comprehensive clinical service to women who have experienced premature menopause, and look after all their needs including -

  • Offering appropriate background tests to establish the possible cause of POI
  • Optimising HRT regimen as per individual needs and preferences
  • Offering ongoing monitoring of bone and cardiovascular health
  • Helping with management of problems with anxiety, lack of confidence, low libido, concern over the aging process, lack of concentration and poor memory
  • Access to psychological support and non -HRT interventions to manage symptoms
  • Advising about options for fertility treatment and preparing for egg donation IVF (such as baseline scans, blood tests and optimisation of HRT)

Issues to consider ahead of your appointment

You may come alone or bring a friend or relative.

There are no specific preparations required, but you might wish to consider the following:

  • write down questions you might wish to ask so that you do not forget
  • you may wish to complete the questionnaire here (This is a validated questionnaire which will help you to describe your symptoms better and help us to provide you with the right tools and treatments to deal with them). The questionnaire will help us to perform an accurate initial assessment of how the menopause is impacting on your quality of life. We will also be able to accurately assess/monitor the impact of therapy, based on the use of same questionnaire at 6 months and 12 months following commencement of treatment.
  • list the main symptoms that trouble you, again so that you do not forget
  • bring with you any medication you are currently taking
  • please check your appointment letter for any specific instructions
  • some of the questions you will be asked during the consultation include your general health, the medication you are currently taking, any allergies, any operations or major illnesses you have had in the past: so please think about these things.
In addition, please bring the following:

  • Your full address and telephone number(s)
  • Your appointment card or appointment letter
  • Your GP’s name and address, and any referral letter

During your appointment

Your first consultation will last 30-60 minutes.

At the first consultation a detailed history will be taken. A physical examination may be undertaken (a chaperone will be present for all physical examinations). There will be plenty of time for you to ask any questions.

After your appointment

Treatment, tailored to your specific presentation, may be commenced immediately.
Results of any investigations may be required before commencing treatment.
You may be asked to keep a symptom diary.
Treatments may be hormonal or alternatives.
Follow-up appointments are usually required, either to commence treatment if results of investigations are required, or to review the impact of any treatment started.
Follow up appointments usually last 20-30 minutes.
